What started as a personal challenge to pass the SFG Level one certification has grown into an unexpected passion for strength training and coaching others…

SimpleandSinister

I took my first kettlebell class in the fall of 2012 and had no idea where the class would lead to... I had just completed my fourth marathon and was looking for a cross training activity for the winter months. I thought it would be a good workout and did not realize how much strength training could come from kettlebells. I had been a distance runner since high school and was stuck in the mentality that strength training wasn’t necessary for runners, it would make me bulky and it would slow down my pace. After training with kettlebells through the winter and spring, I realized I couldn’t have been more wrong about it. I went back into running feeling stronger than I ever have. I had the stamina to power through speed workouts, the strength to carry myself through long runs, and I recovered faster from these tough runs.

Kettlebells were the perfect entry to strength training. They gave me the conditioning I loved from running while building my strength at the same time. This really sparked my interest in strength training. In 2014, I started taking kettlebell and strength training a little more seriously and set a goal to pass the SFG Level 1 Certification. While training for this, my interest and passion for strength training continued to grow. I passed the SFG 1 Certification and started coaching kettlebell classes as a side gig. This unexpected passion for strength training and coaching others motivated me to continue learning. Over the next couple years, I also earned the SFG 2, SFL and SFB certifications.

While training for these certifications, strength training was my primary focus. I continued to run as a supplement to my training but scaled back from my normal mileage. In 2019, my focus shifted back to running, and I used kettlebells and other strength training to supplement my training. Finding the optimal balance between the two to reach my goals and stay healthy and injury free has been an exciting challenge. I’ve developed a passion to coach others find that same optimal balance and reach their full potential.

I love the process of being a student and coaching others while learning daily from those I coach…

Sometimes in life, traumatic events can bring about great blessings. When I was in high school, I suffered an extreme stress-induced sickness that almost killed me. But through that experience, a love for health and fitness developed in me that has led me to meet so many great people and learn more about myself than I ever imagined.

After graduating from high school, I received a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology and a minor in Human Nutrition while studying at the Universities of Wisconsin - La Crosse and Eau Claire. Throughout college, I worked for a variety of different fitness facilities, but it wasn't until discovering kettlebells that I truly found my inner athlete and coach. After attending my first kettlebell 1-day course, where I increased my overhead press by 17 pounds in just 5 minutes with a few tips, I fell in love with kettlebell training. That led me to begin training for my StrongFirst Kettlebell Level One (SFGI) certification.

During my training for the SFG L1, my husband and I decided to open our own fitness studio (Journey Active, based in La Crosse) focused on strength training with bodyweight and kettlebells. I had the opportunity to help so many great people find inner strength that they didn't even know they had, while refining mine alongside them. It allowed me to go an inch wide and a mile deep as I dove further into my training.

I love continuing education, which is why I also trained for and received my StrongFirst Bodyweight (SFB) certification as well as my Precision Nutrition L1 certification. I love the process of being a student and coaching others while learning daily from those I coach. In the next couple of years I hope to achieve my StrongFirst Lifter (SFL) and Kettlebell Level Two (SFGII) certifications.
A few fun things about me: I like good food (I've tried alligator, kangaroo, octopus and loved them all), I enjoy travel, I'm a sucker for a great cup of coffee, and I hiked a 14'er while pregnant.

My name is Devan Weis, and I'm excited to be one of your coaches!
